Your competitor gets mentioned. Your business gets skipped. It is tempting to assume they found a secret shortcut to ChatGPT business recommendations. A better starting point is to examine the question, the sources, and what the answer actually says.
ChatGPT does not publish a formula that guarantees a business recommendation. Still, you can investigate the difference between an answer that includes your company and one that leaves it out.
ChatGPT Business Recommendations Start With the Question
“Find an accountant in New York” and “Find a bilingual accountant in Queens who works with restaurants” describe different needs.
If your website says “accounting services” but never explains your restaurant experience or language capabilities, potential customers have less information to evaluate that fit.
Use that gap as an audit question: does your website clearly explain the the qualities people care about when comparing providers?
This is a content review recommendation, not a claim that adding one phrase will secure a ChatGPT mention.

A Citation, a Recommendation, and an Ad Are Different
Look carefully at how your competitor appears.
Is ChatGPT citing a useful article they published? Listing them among several providers? Explicitly recommending them for the user’s needs? Or displaying a sponsored placement?
Each appearance means something different.
OpenAI explains that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Advertisers cannot buy control over the responses, and an ad does not represent an OpenAI endorsement.
A cited article also does not automatically mean the business behind it was recommended.
Before reacting to a competitor’s visibility, identify which kind of appearance you are looking at. Otherwise, you could spend money trying to solve the wrong problem.
What OpenAI Says About Search Results
OpenAI’s search guidance says results use multiple factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.
That supports a clear distinction: eligibility for search and selection in a particular answer are separate.
OpenAI’s crawler documentation explains how website owners can allow OAI-SearchBot access. Passing that access check does not explain every subsequent inclusion or omission.
Your competitor’s appearance is evidence of one result. It does not reveal the complete process behind it.
Audit the Sources Behind ChatGPT Business Recommendations
Instead of guessing, open the links supporting the answer.
What information do those sources provide? Do they describe the service, location, credentials, or customer needs included in the question? Are they current?
Compare that with your own public information.
For example, a law firm might publish detailed descriptions of its practice areas while another firm relies on a broad homepage. A contractor might clearly document the neighborhoods it serves while another leaves its service area unclear.
Those differences are worth investigating. They are not proof of a specific ranking factor.
Also check for incorrect information. AI answers can contain errors, so verify claims against the original sources rather than treating every recommendation as reliable.

Build Evidence Customers Can Evaluate
Start with the information a person would need before contacting you: relevant services, accurate credentials, genuine project examples, and clear explanations of your process.
Publish useful details from your actual work. Keep business information current. Make those pages easy to find through your website’s navigation and internal links.
Google’s guidance for AI search features reinforces foundational SEO and helpful content. That guidance applies to Google’s systems; it should not be presented as ChatGPT’s ranking formula.
